This project was based on my observation that scrap booking is usually an individual activity – the
participants in the events being archived do not normally collaborate in the creation of a scrapbook.
Furthermore, scrapbooks have been used to mainly document events through the use of physical media such
as photographs. The advancement of technology has allowed society to capture and document events in a
variety of ways. Additionally, forms of expression are moving away from paper and toward digital media.
This project addressed the issues that scrap booking is an individual activity and that physical
photographs are the main elements of scrapbooks. With this project, I explored the creation of a tool
called Shutter that allows groups of people to create multimedia scrapbooks in a collaborative fashion.
To create a new, more collaborative scrap booking experience, I proposed a tool that allows multiple people to build scrapbooks together. Users of this tool would be able to upload media to the scrapbook from a digital camera, video camera, cell phone, computer, or other similar devices capable of capturing and storing media. The scrapbook would include various media types, such as photos, videos, and music. In order to create a shared community which multiple people would ideally be able to easily access, Shutter would most likely be an online system. The vision was that users would be able to use this tool to create scrapbooks and then upload and organize various media which they could also tag/title, write descriptions (which are similar to blogs or comments) about, annotate, and decorate just as they would photos in a physical scrapbook. Additionally, multiple people could collaborate and perform these actions on the same scrapbook. Users would also be able to edit or add to what somebody else has included into their scrapbooks. Thus, Shutter would give people the experience of building a scrapbook as a group and with the use of more varied media. I developed personas and scenarios of use for Shutter, and I also built an initial prototype using Microsoft Visio. This prototype consisted of screenshots detailing the interactions that are depicted in the scenarios of use. These scenarios focused strictly on a user's interaction with Shutter online. In addition, I evaluated my prototype through user testing and iterated on the initial designs.

CS 8803 - HCI Professional Practicum is a graduate level, project-based course that is largely planned and taught by Atlanta HCI professionals, including alumni of graduate programs at Georgia Tech (information design and technology, industrial design, and engineering psychology), the University of Michigan (human factors and ergonomics), and Indiana University (ethnography). The intent is to provide a collegial and intimately sized forum in which students can conceive, create, and present portfolio pieces that are informed not only by their experience and education but also by the realities that experienced professionals face in the workplace.
